Being anxious about separation is a normal part of childhood, but it can be unsettling and some parents may start to feel guilty or stressed. There are steps you can take to make the process of separation easier for your child.

Practice separation

Leave your child with a care giver for a short time in a place they know well at first. When your child is away from home, let him or her bring a familiar object.

Develop a ‘goodbye’ ritual

Rituals can help your child feel confident and can be as simple as a special wave through the window or a goodbye kiss. This helps to let your child know you are going.

Talk with your child’s teacher

Your child’s teacher can give advice about how to manage separation until your child learns new routines.
