Building self-esteem in children is an important aspect of development that should involve both teachers and parents. The role of parents in building their children’s self-esteem is important from the onset. What those who are around the child say and do impacts the child’s development.

Parents should encourage children to perform and keep trying without making them feel like failure is a bad thing. Playing and working with children on activities such as gardening, washing dishes and others improves their self-esteem. When parents love and accept children even when they make mistakes, the children grow with a healthy self-esteem, which is externalized in their future.

Imani Montessori is very keen on developing positive self-esteem among children while learning and during play. The school identifies the talents of each child while recognizing their weaknesses. Through guided and personalized guidance, children are taught to focus on their strengths and accept their weaknesses while trying to solve them.

Self-esteem is an important aspect of development for children at Imani Montessori because the school understands the importance of positive self-esteem and the psychological issues related to low self-esteem. Our curriculum is full of activities that foster positive growth.

High self-esteem pushes children to keep trying despite mistakes and failures. They adopt an “I can do it by myself!” attitude in whatever endeavour they undertake.

Imani Montessori School teachers also play a major role on influencing the self-esteem of their students. One of the main activities we carry out in Imani that improves self-esteem in children is art. Art projects provide an avenue for free expression of creativity by children. The school art projects place emphasis on the positive traits of the children.

Teaching children to solve their problems and giving them the power to make choices once in a while is important for positive self-esteem development. Winning is not always the goal.
