Montessori Education at Home

A Montessori education is wonderful when the children and the teachers can interact directly. However sometimes we are not able to attend school. We might be stuck at home during a pandemic or maybe just unable to attend physical classes for one reason or the other. At that point the home environment becomes a crucial place of early Montessori learning.

The most rewarding and fun work for a Montessori teacher is seeing young children expressing their joy when learning, growing and discovering. The Montessori education environment is a cool place where children thrive at their own pace and in their own interests. The most common expression among parents at Imani Montessori school is pure thrill and amazement at how fast their children are developing, learning and growing.

As our accredited Montessori teachers continue guiding children in their growth and development through online classes, it is equally important for those at home to support children through activities that interest the children. Simply suggest a couple of activities and let the child help decide which activity to do first. Practical life activities are especially easy to practice with children at home.

After the activity has been picked, follow the directions involved in completing it together with your child. Involve the child in gathering the materials and bringing the activity together in their own way. Whether you’re going shopping or feeding the chicken, take your child with you and if possible let them participate in the experience by allowing them to hold, carry or touch certain items required for the activity. Let your child place that packet of salt in the shopping basket or let them hold that egg before you carefully place it in the basket with the rest.

Assist when needed but as little as possible. When the activity is done let them put everything away (tools, toys, containers, marker pens etc) back into their storage. Imani Montessori school teachers continue working with the children through online classes to help them grow and blossom into able, global citizens. Parents and guardians can complement those efforts at home by following those steps with each new activity you engage your child in.

Happy learning!
